Olivia Muiru

Founder and board member B Lab East Africa. Expertise in international development, social entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability and social enterprise. Recognized as an Emerging Leader in 2017. Skoll Fellow 2019. 

Olivia’s areas of experience and expertise include environmental sustainability, financial services, sustainable markets, responsible supply chains, standards, and economic opportunities. 

As founder of the non-profit organization, B Lab East Africa, Olivia is working on building a community of people using business as a force for good in the region. Under her leadership, B Lab East Africa has supported over 600 companies in East Africa to measure and manage their impact data by using the B Impact Assessment; certified over 40 companies in East and South Africa as B Corps and identified legal pathways for businesses to follow a triple bottom line approach in the region. 

Before establishing B Lab East Africa, Olivia held various positions at B Lab Global office, supporting its expansion worldwide. Prior to that, she worked as a Social Rating Analyst in the African Regional Office of Microfinanza Rating (MFR). During her time with MFR, she collaborated with Microfinance Institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, rating their social impact, running target client focus group discussions and measuring income levels of target groups for the MFIs. 

Olivia was recognized in 2017 as an Emerging Leader by Skoll Foundation and Mastercard Foundation, in 2018 Top 40 Under 40 Women in Business in Kenya and as a Skoll Fellow in 2019. 

Olivia is passionate about supporting businesses to strengthen their social, environmental and financial performance. She has led sustainability workshops in various countries including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, and Australia. She has also participated in or facilitated expert panels at numerous global conferences including World Forum for a Responsible Economy, Vatican Impact Investing Conference, Skoll World Forum and many more. 

She graduated summa cum laude with a BS in Finance and International Business from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, holds a Diploma from Colorado State University on Global Social and Sustainable Enterprises and is in the process of completing her MBA from United States International University – Africa.

She is currently on sabbatical from B Lab EA and using this time to study and support startups and nonprofits in Kenya on their sustainability strategy.
